Solo Jazz/Charleston is the dance that became popular in the 1920s,'30s and '40s in the United States. It originated from African Dances imported to North America through the slave trade, and is one of the earliest forms of African American culture in the United States along with Jazz and Swing music, which was widespread in the same years and on which it is danced. It is danced alone and performed through improvisation or choreography. Its main characteristics are individuality and rhythm; each dancer is free to express his or her personality by developing an individual style. Being a contemporary dance to the better known Lindy Hop, the study of this discipline becomes essential for Lindy hoppers to enrich and personalize their dance even as a couple.
Only requirement to enter the halls: clean spare shoes, e.g., low canvas sneakers with rubber soles, for both leaders and followers, no high heels or leather soles, comfortable, light clothing, and a great desire to have fun, socialize, experiment, and open up to a new world.
